This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 3/27/05
Now booking tarpon dates for May and June along the Lee Island Beaches!
Happy Easter to everyone.
It was a week filled with yucky weather and tough fishing.
Monday and Tuesday Harry Ano and Pat Esposito, two fly fishers from South Carolina, rode a lot of miles in Spotted Tail. On Monday we searched much of the Mosquito Lagoon. It was cloudy and moderately breezy much of the day, but even when the sun was out we didn't see much. They blind cast all day with rattle flies and managed six trout to about three pounds. Tuesday we tried the Indian River. We had a little more sun than the previous day and a moderate south wind. Morse Creek, Banana Creek, the power plants, the Rinker Canal, the NASA Causeway, we tried a variety of places and saw very little. We found one small clump of redfish and they managed to get three to about ten pounds on a Clouser Minnow.
Wednesday the rain, wind, and lightning led to a cancellation.
Thursday and Friday Duncan Smith, a fly fisher from Atlanta, joined me for a paddling trip (finally!) into the no motor zone. It was overcast almost all day. We saw perhaps a dozen tailing black drum, one small school of about eight black drum, and exactly four in-the-slot redfish all day. We did manage to get a black drum of over 30 pounds on another fly tied by Ron Novitsky, a honey colored Clouser Minnow. It was the only bite we got. To see only two dozen fish while paddling 10 or 12 miles is a darned slow day, I think.
Friday Duncan and I tried the Mosquito Lagoon. Again it was overcast and windy, and fish were scarce. A fly rod is simply not a great blind casting tool. Those fish we did see, and we saw maybe 30 fish until the weather drove us off the water, were literally right under the bow of the boat when we spotted them. Duncan got one small trout and one very nice blowfish (his first!), both on a rattle fly.
Yesterday I had a cancellation due to the weather.
Right now the sun is out, but it's quite windy and there are a lot of clouds. I doubt if the fishing will be good today. We'll see again tomorrow, won't we?
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
