Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

John Kumiski's Spotted Tail report, Mosquito Lagoon, 4/4
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated4/4/05
Now booking tarpon dates for May and June along the Lee Island Beaches!
First off, my new website (still at www.spottedtail.com) is now online. Although very much a work in progress, it has vastly superior graphics and better information than the old site, and will only improve as I continue to work on it. If you have a chance please stop in and check it out, and also please let me know what you think. Thanks!
On the 29th Scott Dennis and Scott Arndt rode the Spotted Tail around the Mosquito Lagoon. The fish weren't exactly committing suicide, but we were in fish for most of the day, and using 5 inch DOA CAL jerk baits eight slot reds were caught and released. It was a beautiful day!
On the 30th Greg Evangelist fished a half day in the Mosquito Lagoon. Greg managed a single trout on a DOA CAL and a single slot red on a RipTide Weedless Shrimp. By the way, these baits have been discontinued so if you like them and know a store that has a stash I suggest you bust open the piggy bank and go buy all they have.
The 31st saw me at the dermatologist. Didn't fish that day.
On April 1 fly fisher Gary Vasques and his 85 year old uncle John joined me on Spotted Tail for a day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. Again, in a disturbing trend, the fish were there but unwilling to commit to our lures. We had a few missed strikes, Uncle John got two reds and two trout RipTide Weedless Shrimp, and Gary got two slot reds on RipTide shrimp on a Woodies Rattle Hook. He switched to the fly rod when we found some tailers and did a little damage, catching three on a Clouser Minnow. We also had the best fish of the day cut us off on a trim tab.
Yesterday I fished father and son fly casting team Tim and TJ Bettis in the no motor zone, Tim in the canoe with me and TJ in his Wilderness Systems Tarpon. When we left it was ridiculously windy, I could hardly believe we were out. But as the day wore on the wind layed down to a fishable level. We found some black drum, even some tailers. We ended up getting quite a few shots, boating two, missing a couple of strikes, and generally staying well entertained considering how poor the conditions were at the start of the trip.
Today I had quite the age range in the Spotted Tail, a seven year old girl, her father David Perryman, roughly my age, and his father, 77 year old Bill Perryman. We started the day on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was beautiful and I expected much better than we found. By noon we had two undersized reds to show for our efforts. I pulled the boat, went to the power plant, and saved the day by doing so. Between them they got a 12 pound black drum, two crevalle, and four trout, all on CAL jigs.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
