Spotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon report 5/1/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 5/1/05
Now booking tarpon dates for May and June along the Lee Island Beaches!
Happy May Day to everyone. At one time this was a fairly important holiday, but now all it does is KICK OFF THE OFFICIAL START OF TARPON SEASON!!! Ooh yeah!
On Tuesday Mr. Jack Radloff joined me for some Mosquito Lagoon fishing. We didn't turn up a redfish, but Jack had a 20 inch trout in the boat before we got out of the Haulover Canal. He ended up with four decent ones to 24 inches, all caught on 5 inch DOA CAL jerkbaits with a Woodie's Rattler hook. We also got numerous fish between 14 and 18 inches on both the CAL and a Yozuri Banana Boat plug. Fishing wasn't spectacular but it was steady.
Wednesday found me driving to Jacksonville to fly fish for redfish with John Bottko. I drove through a large thunderstorm on the way, which marked a passing cold front. Once again my timing was outstanding. We caught an afternoon low tide and paddled kayaks all over the marsh looking for fish. John caught not one but two large rays on fly. They were on a shallow flat when we found them. I thought at first they were black drum. We'd see the tip of a wing come up and think it was a tail, even though it didn't look quite right. Rays on fly, could open up a whole new fishery.
We were back at it the following morning. Did I mention my impeccable timing already? There was a redfish tournament scheduled for the next day and the entire area was blanketed with tournament fishermen. Fortunately in the kayaks we could get into areas before they could, but even at that we only found a handful of fish. John got two trout on Clouser minnows, I got some photos, and I was left with unfinished business. I guess I'll have to try it again.
Friday my trailer was delivered to EZ Loader in Port St. Lucie for some serious work. I now have a brand new axle on the trailer, with the new oil immersion hubs. They told me the hubs should require NO maintenance for at least two years. That in itself was worth the drive down there. But wait, there's more! After dropping off the trailer I drove to Stuart and rendezvoused with Mark Nichols and Jerry Rosen for some fishing around their area. Needless to say we used DOA Lures (I fly fished a little bit). None of us got a bite, it was REAL slow. Of course I got there after 9 AM, not exactly Mark's usual pre-dawn patrol start. It was good to see both of them, though, and we did have fun. Mark says fish are breaking into his warehouse to get at the new popper heads that he's developed for use with jerk baits.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
