Spotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon report 5/8/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 5/8/05
Tarpon time is here. Are YOU going fishing? Now booking tarpon dates for May and June along the Lee Island Beaches!
Happy Mothers Day to everyone, especially the mothers. My own bride, mother of two, is currently reading the newspaper while enjoying breakfast in bed. Hey, if you've ever witnessed a child being born you'll agree she deserves all that and a whole lot more…
Fishing, that's right! Monday Frank Kingston joined me for a cloudy, windy, and nearly fishless excursion on the Mosquito Lagoon. By noon time we had seen exactly four redfish, and using top water plugs and jerk baits caught two trout, one a dink. We called the day at that point.
Tuesday, under much nicer conditions, Ian and Charity Rutter, fly fishers from Tennessee, joined me for another Mosquito Lagoon excursion. We saw many more fish than the previous day, even found a bunch of tailing reds. They would not let us get into casting range. We abandoned the boat and went wading after them and they still wouldn't cooperate. Ian had a strike from a red that he missed, and Charity got a ladyfish to kind of get the skunk off, but in spite of having some excellent opportunities not a redfish came to hand.
Wednesday Mel and Brian Geer tried the Banana River Lagoon. It was overcast and windy and we didn't see a redfish. What we did see was a couple of dozen snook. In a half day, using jerk baits and DOA Shrimp Mel caught three trout, Brian had and missed three strikes. Not a snook came to hand.
Thursday Dick Dolloff and his buddy Jim Threw surface plugs in the Indian River Lagoon. We got quite a few trout. We only saw one redfish, and didn't catch it. We also saw quite a few snook, but they didn't bite either. Finally, we saw several tarpon. While trying for those I managed to catch a crevalle.
Friday it was drizzly, overcast, and windy and I postponed the trip I had scheduled, hoping for nicer weather and hungrier fish.
It was a frustrating week, as the fish just didn't seem to want to eat. Maybe this week…
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
