Spotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon report 5/14/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 5/14/05
Tarpon time is here. Are YOU going fishing? Now booking tarpon dates for May and June along the Lee Island Beaches!
On Monday Frank Kingston joined me for a lovely day's excursion on the Mosquito Lagoon. At our first stop Frank got three reds on DOA Shrimp, the largest two being twin 32" fish, a very nice start to the day. We didn't get any more reds but did get several trout. There have been a lot of trout around!
Thursday Dick Dolloff and his buddy Dave joined me for some fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. We stopped at first where Frank had gotten his fish on Monday. They were there but we didn't get a good shot, and then they left, jilting us. We went to a wade fishing spot where there were a lot of trout and reds. Using a sexyfly I caught the largest trout I have ever gotten, a fish of over 30 inches. The boat was 100 yards away and rather than risk hurting the fish bringing it back to the boat to photograph or measure it I just released it. We got one other redfish and a flounder, both on a Seaducer.
Friday fly caster Dr. Bud Robertson joined me for a day on the Mosquito Lagoon. The school of reds apparently moved from the first spot as we only saw a single fish there. We went to the wading spot and went wading. Bud started the festivities there with a seven pound trout, the biggest one he'd ever gotten. He was using a Carolina Critter. At that spot we then got two other trout to seven pounds and five redfish. The action finally died so we went fishing for black drum. We found a load of them but they wouldn't take a fly in spite of numerous excellent presentations and fly changes. We finally gave up on them and went looking for tailing redfish. Since when won't tailers take a fly? Bud threw to 12 or 15 fish, changed flies a couple of times, and every single fish refused, very weird. He got one more smallish trout, about 16 inches long, and we called it a day. It was a good day though, with two seven pound trout on fly!
There probably won't be a fishing report next week as I won't be near my computer.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
