Spotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon Report 6/27/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 6/27/05
I haven't reported in a couple of weeks, so let's get down to business, starting from June 16. I took the Maverick out on a scouting trip on that day, launching at Parrish Park and fishing my way all the way to Tiger Shoal. Although I got one trout and a crevalle on a Sexyfly, I mostly tossed Chug Bugs. The trout fishing was decent (I got probably ten fish in the slot) but I only saw a single redfish, which, even though he followed the Chug Bug for 10 or 12 feet, I did not catch. The boat was back on the trailer just before the rain started, about 1 PM.
On the 17th angler Ron Hinkens from Wisconsin joined me on the Maverick for a day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. Again, since it was cloudy and the water is high, we tossed Chug Bugs, and again the trout fishing was decent. One thing about Chug Bugs, you miss a lot of strikes, but even with that we got 15 or so trout and Ron got a single red of about six pounds. Again, we got chased off by the rain and lightning at about 1 PM.
On the 20th I launched the kayak from the Bee Line causeway into the Indian River. I hadn't fished that area of the lagoon for a couple of years and didn't know what if anything I would find. I saw one ladyfish, three snook, and about a dozen redfish. Fishing from the kayak was tough, since it was cloudy and the water is high. I spent a good deal of the time wading and almost stepped on several of the fish that I did see. I only had two shots, and had one bite on a Sexyfly, which I missed. I was chased off by rain and lightning by 1 PM.
On the 24th I was supposed to fish George Yarko. We got rained out before we left his house.
Yesterday I took my son Maxx and his girlfriend Jen out from Kennedy Point Park. It was weird, there was this big ball of hot fire in the sky! What was that thing?? Fishing was fairly slow. We tossed Chug Bugs for about three hours and got six or eight trout, only two legal ones. There were many missed strikes. Maxx had a hardhead catfish whack his Chug Bug, I got some pictures of that. Then in a stop at the power plant we chunked with frozen mullet and got three six to eight pound blacktip sharks. We were off the water by 1 PM, even though there was neither rain nor lightning! And I was so getting accustomed to the stink of the raingear!
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
