Another week, another fishing report.
Sunday last Maxx and I were supposed to go fishing together, but the boy couldn't drag himself out of bed. I found other things to do, not being fond of Sunday crowds. When he did get up he said, "How about if we go in the lake?" (Our lot has an overgrown canal next to it that leads out to a lovely pond.) Using the canoe we fought through the canal and got to the pond, which had three jetskiis, a gheenoe, and a jonboat running around on it. In spite of that we got four bass and six bluegills on popping bugs in two hours, all in all a fun and productive trip with number one son.
Wednesday Mr. Woodie's Rattlers, Larry McGlashan himself, joined me for a morning on the Mosquito Lagoon. I haven't been out there much lately and it showed. I finally found a spot with decent number of fish, but they weren't eating well. We ended up with two reds and two trout, all on soft plastics and all on the small side. Larry's a good man and makes several great products. If you use soft plastics you should also be using Woodie's Rattlers. Visit www.luresonline.com/shopping/woodies_rattlers.html.
Thursday morning I used a kayak and went back out into Kiwanis Lake, the pond behind my house. Using a popping bug I got ten bass and two bluegills in two hours, great fun. Then I drove to Florial City to speak to the Floral City Anglers Association. I didn't even know where Floral City was (just south of Inverness), but they have a large, active group there and I had a wonderful time. Thank you, guys! I was hoping to fish with Rick Burns the next day, but as it turned out I booked a charter.
Friday Gene Barrington, fly fisher from Atlanta, and I used a canoe to access backcountry ponds out of River Breeze. There were decent numbers of fish, but the water was dirty. Between that and the clouds the fish were very hard to see when they weren't tailing. Gene had three bites and boated two reds, both in the slot, using a white Deceiver. We ran over at least five or six times that many. Often when we spotted them you could count their scales, very hard to make a good presentation with a fly in those circumstances! Gene really enjoyed the canoe trip though, and we'll probably be doing more of them.
Saturday the Healy family, or three fifths of it, joined me for some kayak fishing out of River Breeze. Using mullet chunks they got four reds, all in the slot, and several of those delightful whiskered trout, one of my favorite fish- NOT. There were a few missed strikes as well. The day was warm but lovely, and we had a load of fun.
Yesterday I kayaked back into Kiwanis Lake. I got seven bass and a bluegill, had the whole pond to myself. On the way back through the canal, a deer crashed into the water and swam across right in front of me. I almost could have whacked it with my paddle, very cool.
Well, I have to get ready for the trip to Jacksonville, so I'll wrap this up.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is great and I love my work!!
