Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spotted Tail north Indian River/Mosquito Lagoon report 11/27/05

Spotted Tail Space Coast report, 11/27/05

What a frustrating week…

Monday my old friends Jim and Ralph Tedesco joined me for a windy day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon from Spotted Tail. Fish were hard to find, and we only had two bites. We landed a little rat red, and missed the other strike. I was holding the rod for that miss, tossing a rattle fly. I just missed it on the strike. So what, that happens all the time, right?

Tuesday the wind was howling and I stayed home.

Wednesday Don Adams and his 12 year old son Seth joined me, again on the Mosquito Lagoon. I would have liked to take them to the power station to get the boy some steady action, but it's closed until April 1st. If you live in Saskatchewan you'll laugh, but it was pretty close to bitterly cold. My eyes were watering on that first bone-chilling boat ride, and I definitely didn't have enough clothes on. It didn't warm up until into the afternoon, and by then it was time to leave. In the meantime we got a couple dozen trout on DOA Shrimp equipped with Woodie's Rattles. I only saw one redfish all day.

Thursday while America feasted on golden birds I pushed Isaac and Max Greeley, fly fishers from Pennsylvania, around the Mosquito Lagoon. The day was breezy but delightful and there was very little traffic. We found a hoard of tailing reds, got shot after shot after shot, and could not seal the deal with any of them. Finally Isaac got one to take a grizzly Seaducer, but he lost it during the ensuing battle. We hit a dry spell for a while, then found a shoreline which again had lots of fish, mostly reds with a few big trout mixed in. Again, getting a response was next to impossible. Isaac had another fish take the same fly but he missed it. We ended up utterly fishless, a somewhat sad ending to an otherwise beautiful day.

On the way home I stopped in to see Ron Novitzsky, who plied me with roast turkey with all the fixin's, and a glass of wine to boot. Then he gave me a bunch of flies and sent me on my way. Thanks, Ron, you're too kind! I'll be cooking my Thanksgiving turkey today, starting as soon as I finish this report.

Yesterday I took the kayak out to the Indian River Lagoon. The weather was supposed to be near perfect (it really was, too) and I thought I could find some tailing fish. I did (hit this link http://www.spottedtail.com to see the photos), and here's where the frustration really kicked in. At spot "A" I had three bites on a black Sexy Fly. I missed the first two and then in a classic case of overcompensation struck too hard on the third and popped him off. I then pulled the boat to go to spot "B." The gate on the road was locked, so I had to come up with an alternative, and picked spot "C." I found about a dozen fish tailing around a big clump of dead seagrass. I had two bites, both of which I missed, and managed to spook away the rest of them, setting new records for ineptitude. I ended up utterly fishless, again a somewhat sad ending to an otherwise beautiful day. So what, that happens all the time, right?
