Mosquito Lagoon report 1/15/06
Spotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon fishing report, 1/15/06
First off, several weeks ago, before Christmas, I asked readers to share with me ways to cast flies with a spinning rod. I offered a Spotted Tail Prize Pack as a raffle prize to anyone who responded. I got a bunch of responses and want to thank everyone who did respond. Most answers involved a casting bubble, a few suggested adding weight to the fly or leader, and a few were truly unusual and unique. This might just be the start of an article!
Between the holidays, working, and various projects I nearly forgot to do the raffle, but this week I did remember. The winner is Jay Leskowyak. Send me your snail mail address and I will send you the prize.
Fishing this week-
The weather was fantastic and there were plenty of fish around, but they weren't eating very well. Also, the water is surprisingly dirty for this time of year. Ordinarily it's like gin by now.
Such pictures as I have, and there are a few good ones this week, can be seen at http://www.spottedtail.com
Monday David Stock, a fly caster from Colorado, and his friend Yama Yamamoto, from London, graced the Spotted Tail. Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon we got a mixed bag of trout and reds. The trout were nice fish, averaging three to five pounds with a couple a little bigger. Reds were in the slot. David's preferred fly was a black Kwan. Yama used 4" DOA jerk baits on a Woodie's Rattle Hook and root beer colored DOA Shrimp.
David Stock was my solo angler again on Tuesday. The fish were harder to find and much less cooperative. He did manage three nice trout, but that was it for the entire day.
Wednesday Mac and Sherry Dye came up from West Palm Beach looking for redfish. They wanted to bring one home for supper and were thwarted in their desires. They got four beautiful fish, well over the slot between 36 and 40 inches, caught on live shrimp or ladyfish chunks. All the others were rats caught on DOA Shrimp and DOA jerk baits. We also got several nice trout
Friday Rick Orcutt, a tremendously skilled fly fisher, came up from Miami wanting redfish. Even though the water was slick calm all morning it was cloudy and hard to see, and the fish were mostly just lying around, not moving. We would see tails frequently but they would be almost motionless. When Rick would cast and move the fly the fish would flee in abject terror. It was very weird, and frustrating as hell. He ended up getting five bites and putting one 27 inch red and one 23 inch trout into the boat. A controlled burn in the afternoon covered the lagoon in acrid smoke and made breathing a real chore.
Reader Kevin Dubois emailed me and said, "Love reading the reports on your site! Since I'm not familiar with the fishing down there (that's why I read the reports), could you add pictures of the flies as well as the fish?" It makes me think I ought to do a fly of the week page when I have the time. Mr. Data, make it so! The link to this week's fly, the Trout Bite, is http://www.spottedtail.com
