Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!
Those of you who want to learn more about fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon may wish to attend the Show and Tell Seminar scheduled for February 12th. Why is it called a Show and Tell? Because I SHOW you where to fish, and TELL you how to go about it. You will learn more in one day during this popular seminar than you could in a year on your own! The session on the 11th has filled, and there are 12 spaces still open for the 12th.
Cost is $40 per person For more information visit http://www.spottedtail.com email me at [email protected], or call me at 407.977.5207.
Fishing this week-
First off, as usual, if you want to see this week's photos please visit this link: http://www.spottedtail.com
I only fished one day last week. Ron Bull (561-385-0914, http://www.ronbulladventures.com/) dropped me out of the sky onto a small, inaccessible lake in central Florida's Polk County to fish for bluegills and whatever else might bite using a pontoon equipped Piper Cub.
We waded and used four weight fly rods equipped with floating lines. My leader was 10 feet long, tapered to a 10 pound tippet. Ron used popping bugs exclusively, preferring to fish for bream. I tried a variety of surface and sub-surface flies, wanting as many different species as possible.
The best fish I hooked was a bass of about four pounds. He felt the hook, took to the air, and then immediately wrapped my leader around some lily pads. By the time I got untangled he was gone. The biggest fish I caught was a rather unglamorous mudfish, three, maybe four pounds. Both these fish fell for a lightly weighted, black #6 Wooly Bugger. Ron said the speckled perch had been biting well but I failed to catch one.
We ended up getting about a dozen fat bluegills, a couple of small bass, and the mudfish between us. Ron said this was a rather slow day, with a good one being a couple of dozen 'gills, a bass or two or three, and a few specks, depending on fly selection, weather, water temperature, and the mood of the fish on that particular day.
The plane ride was at least as much fun as the fishing. The Piper is an amazing little aircraft, and gives you a perspective on your fishing spots and your home state available few other ways. I highly recommend a trip with Mr. Bull!
Tuesday I spent most of the day packing, since I was supposed to fish with Shawn Healy on Wednesday. A front came through and blew us out, though.
Thursday I flew to New Jersey to attend the Fly Fishing Show (http://www.flyfishingshow.com/) in Somerset. This show bills itself as the world's largest fly fishing show and I believe it. Some of the notables there included A.K. Best, Jack Gartside, Chico Fernandez, Gary Taylor, Tim Borski, Theo Copeland, Fishy Fullum, Mike Martinek, David Skok, Enrico Puglisi, all kinds of folks from the world of freshwater trout and salmon, outfitters from all over the world, many of the major rod, reel, line, and vise manufacturers, etc, etc. Dozens of fly tyers from the entire world tie constantly, and several Destination Theatre presentations run concurrently all day long. It was a heck of a show and I feel privileged to have participated in it.
I'll be attending the much smaller Chicago Fly Fishing Show this coming weekend. If you live up that way please stop in and see the show!
Upcoming Events-
-On February 4 and 5 I'll be tying flies and making two presentations at the Fly Fishing Show in Tinley Park, Illinois.
-The MINWR Show and Tell Fishing Seminar is scheduled for February 11 and 12th. Visit http://www.spottedtail.com for more information or to sign up.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is great and I love my work!!
