Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 2/20/06
Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!
Due to popular demand I have scheduled another Show and Tell seminar on March 25th. The cost is still $40 per person. For more information visit http://www.spottedtail.com , email me at [email protected], or call me at 407.977.5207.
Back on the 10th I fished Jim Jarmolowski and his friend Joel Huey out on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was beautiful all morning and man, the fish were ON! Jim hooked a fish on his third cast, using a Johnson Minnow, and the fishing stayed hot all morning. Between them Jim and Joel got at least 15 reds to 28 inches (Jim's personal best), two trout to 28 inches (Joel's personal best, on a DOA Shrimp), broke a few off, had a fish break the hook on a spoon, lost several, and had a bunch missed strikes and blown shots. We used four different lures, the Johnson spoon, the DOA Shrimp, RipTide's Weedless Shrimp, and the 5.5 inch DOA CAL. Once the wind came up at about 1 pm or so the fishing slowed right down, although we did get a couple more after that.

On the 11th and 12th I ran the Show and Tell seminars. About 20 people showed up for each one and even though the weather was a little frosty on Sunday we ran the entire trip. Unsolicited testimonials can be seen at http://www.spottedtail.com
Fishing Monday was called due to weather.
Tuesday I went out scouting from Lopez Fish Camp in a kayak. The high temperature that day was 53 degrees, so it was cold and slightly breezy. I didn't see a lot of fish but did find a few. I convinced four to eat but in a display of incompetence only brought one redfish to hand, a nice fish of about 26 inches that fell for a Trout Bite.
Wednesday fly fisher Mike Hodge joined me for a kayak trip out of River Breeze. We started late, about noon time. Fishing still wasn't spectacular but we did find some fish and managed one slot red and five gorgeous trout, running between three and five pounds, between us, all on Trout Bites or Redfish Bites.
Saturday I fished with Geno Thomas out of a great old Dolphin Super Skiff from McLeans Town on Grand Bahama Island. I hadn't bonefished in years and was a little anxious in the morning, but after getting a few fish I loosened up and got better. I ended up nine fish to six pounds, caught on a variety of flies with a brand new TFO TiCr 9 foot seven-weight. What a great rod that is! I missed two strikes and blew a LOT of shots. We saw hundreds of fish including some real pigs. They were cruising, tailing, mudding, etc., everything from singles to large schools, on flats, in creeks, a variety of habitats. It was a wonderful spot. The flats stretch all the way to Abaco, 25 miles away! I intend to go back for more than just a single day. I want to put a group together, so anyone interested in trying the fishing there please get in touch with me.
