SPotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon report 2/25
Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 2/25/06
Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!
Due to popular demand I have scheduled another Show and Tell seminar on March 25th. The cost is still $40 per person. For more information visit http://www.spottedtail.com , email me at [email protected], or call me at 407.977.5207.
I was out three days this week, and although we saw decent numbers of fish on two of those days, they were not eating what I was offering particularly well. The water in the Mosquito Lagoon is extremely low. In some spots it's crystal clear, and in others it's really murky. One of fishing's little mysteries right there…
Wednesday Shawn Healy joined me on a scouting day on the Mosquito Lagoon. We moved fairly quickly, looking for fish, and while we saw fish in most places we looked, we didn't see a lot of fish anywhere. Shawn used a 1/4 ounce gold Johnson Minnow and a root beer colored DOA Shrimp and caught three slot reds. I hooked and lost one on a RipTide Weedless Shrimp, and got a trout of about four pounds on a Chug Bug. Got to love those surface strikes!
Thursday and Friday I fished fly fisher Terry Rusthoven, a snowbird from Nebraska, also on the Mosquito Lagoon. Thursday it was fairly breezy, with lots of clouds, both high cirrus clouds and low cumulus, moving fast. It was hard to see into the water. We saw 50 or 60 fish all day, but had only few good shots. A lot of the fish were almost underneath us before we saw them. We didn't convert any of them.
We ran into John Frazier in one place and watched his anglers, who were using shrimp, catch two or three redfish. He said there had been a big school of reds there the previous day and there had been wall to wall boats, with most people hooking up. He said one guide's party had gotten 30 plus fish. Then he invited us in and left. We saw a few live fish, and several dead ones lying on the bottom. It was sad. Why do you suppose those fish weren't there anymore??? IMHO fishing just isn't meant to be a group activity.
Friday was overcast and cool, with a solid 15 mph wind, first out of the north and then shifting to the east. After the previous day I figured we were more likely to be struck by lightning than to catch a fish. But Terry put three reds into the boat, all on a Rattle Rouser, and had a few missed strikes as well. It was a tough day, but I've had worse!
