Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!

Last Sunday was a lovely day, sunny and somewhat breezy. New Yorkers Marshall Ford and his friend Barry joined me for a six hour trip on the Mosquito Lagoon. We worked hard for our first three fish (two reds and a trout), tossing gold Johnson Minnows and DOA Shrimp. Then we got serious, staked out the boat, and cast out some chunks. Seven more reds to 28 inches visited with us briefly. All fish were released to fight again another day. So were we, for that matter!
On Tuesday local anglers Derrick Carr and his friend Rick joined me on Spotted Tail for a morning half day. The sun was shining beautifully but the lagoon looked like a washing machine due to 20 mph winds with gusts to 28. Perfect sightfishing weather, isn't it? To my surprise we found quite a few fish and four reds came into the boat, all caught on gold Johnson Minnows, all released. There were several missed strikes and a couple of fish hooked and lost. All things considered we did quite well I thought.
Wednesday was cobia day. Tom Van Horn, Jim Tedesco, and I joined Scott Bradford on Afternoon Delight, a 38 foot Hydro Sport. We searched diligently and threw chartreuse jigs to seven fish. I hooked the only three we hooked, breaking off one and somehow losing the other two. We only saw one tripletail, who didn't want my DOA. Sad to say, we didn’t catch a fish. But Scott is a great guy, the boat was awesome, and frustration notwithstanding I really enjoyed myself. Thank you, Scott!
Thursday Bill Covington and his friend Larry, from the thriving metropolis of Floral City, joined me for some freshwater fly fishing on the St. Johns River. We launched at the Jolly Gator on SR 46 and went looking for shad. We found and caught crappie, warmouths, bluegills, fliers, a mudfish, and four small largemouth bass. We saw what I am pretty sure were shad flipping on the surface but we never got one to bite. I named them the flipping non-biting fish, since their actual identity remained a mystery. Except for all the mud in my boat it was a very fun and enjoyable day.
Yesterday Alec and Casey Peltier, fly fishers from Virginia, joined me for a six hour day on the Mosquito Lagoon. It was like Tuesday wind-wise, except it was coming out of the south instead of the north. The Peltiers are trout fishermen, so the wind made fishing really difficult, as it was again 20 mph with gusts to 28. Not many places to hide from a south wind at 20 mph on the Mosquito Lagoon! Again, we found reasonable numbers of fish, but only had two bites. One redfish of 22 inches or so was released, and one nice trout received a Palm Beach release.
Today son Maxx and I went to the Mosquito Lagoon. Maxx was hot, I was not. He got two black drum, each about 12 pounds, on a black Redfish Worm fly, his first black drum on fly. He missed several strikes and hooked and lost two redfish. I had exactly one bite, on a Rattle Rouser, a redfish of 26 inches. Considering the winds and clouds I thought we did pretty well, since we were only out about four hours.
