Shad, Redfish, and Black Drum all Biting this week

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report from Spotted Tail 1/17/09

Upcoming Events:

January 23, 24, 25, Fly Fishing Show, Somerset, NJ. I'll be tying flies, signing books, and giving a program or two. If you plan on attending the show, please stop by and say hello!

For the remainder of January I'm running a charter special- book two days and get the third day free.

There is a Space Shuttle launch scheduled for 8:30 AM February 12th. I still have this day open. This is an opportunity to get a day's fishing in and see the launch at the same time. If you time it right we can get a photo of you holding a nice redfish with the rocket going up behind you! Call 407.977.5207 now to reserve this date.

Monday morning I met fly fisher John Brewer at the ramp in Titusville. The wind was blowing about 20 and it was spitting rain as a cold front came through. To my chagrin he didn't want to go out, not that I blamed him. I was home at 8 AM.
Chris Myers and I went to the St. Johns River that afternoon to investigate the shad run rumors we'd been hearing. I ran aground once- the water is very low. But I did get two shad, one on a small white trout streamer and one on a small black Clouser Minnow. We also got 30 or so sunfish of various species on a variety of flies (we tried a lot of different flies trying to entice the shad we could see breaking) and Chris got a catfish on a Tiny TerrorEyz. Not great fishing but it beat sitting at home.

Wednesday Susan Cocking and I journeyed into the Banana River Lagoon via canoe. Using a black Bunny Booger I hooked and quickly lost the first fish we saw, a black drum of about 30 pounds. Sue got a redfish on spin at midday, a fish of about ten pounds.

In spite of seeing reasonable numbers of both redfish and black drum, both of which were tailing, we didn't get another bite.

Another cold front came through Thursday morning, so it's been cold and windy the past two days. When the weather moderates fishing should be outstanding.

Life is short- GO FISHING!!!

Life is great and I love my work!
