We did have a cooler air mass take over this week but it has helped some of our fishing. Spanish and king mackerel were abundant before this front and some are already migrating back into the Venice/Englewood areas. They are scattered but available. More should move in any day. I found numerous schools of Spanish and little tunny on yesterdays outing. Baitfish minnows are still abundant; they sure make catching easier. Several friends reported observing smaller cobia cruising Boca Grande beaches while stone crabbing. My friend, Charlie, even caught a silver king or tarpon yesterday just off of Boca Grande and saw several others. Sharks are also abundant and can really scream the line off our reels.
Outside and near shore fishing will improve this week as the waters warm back up with our great weather. There have been several sailfish caught and released this past month in thirty to forty feet. There are many possibilities as we fish these migratory schools of bait and fish.
We were blown out for kings last weekend but did manage to get out Saturday with Ernie from Venice and his friends visiting from the cold North Country. It was a cool, slow start but we began to pick at the redfish as the morning warmed up. They caught a dozen redfish from twenty to thirty inches. I was pleasantly surprised that they also landed and released six snook up to twenty-eight inches. We even caught a few trout and a fat flounder to cap off the trip. It had warmed up nicely so we went to the Stump Pass Grille for a fine lunch and time to reflect on their new memories from the trip. The novice of the threesome out fished both of the more experienced fisherman. Please note that we had some fine live shrimp; but caught our fish on cut up frozen minnows; yes the snook too. We were patient and allowed the fish to move in to us and find our offerings. Take your time. Lures are still productive if you use them properly; take it slow in colder waters.
I expect of inside and near shore fishing to continue to improve until we see colder water temps. Forecasts now predict fair weather thru this weekend. We should have kings and mackerel to enjoy for Thanksgiving if it does not get too cold. Even if it cools off red fishing will just get better. Pompano are due any time but none yet. Our waters are looking great and boat traffic is not a problem. Many fishermen are busy hunting. Let's Go Fishin' now! Winter is closer every day! Captain Van Hubbard
