SeaVee Boats - Catch More Fish

Venice Inlet and the Gulf of Mexico

Capt. Dave Pinkham

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Kingfish Season is Here!

The weather is finally starting to cool off a bit, and the fishing action is still red hot.

There’s plenty of white bait scattered all up and down the beaches which is excellent considering the kingfish run has already started cranking up.

On the last couple of trips out on the Gulf we’ve had some decent action. The larger grouper are hitting out in the 100-foot and deeper range. This time of year red grouper are almost a sure thing if you get out to these depths.

In closer to the coast in the 10 to 20 mile range we’ve been catching lots of under sized grouper, with an occasional keeper. The mangrove snapper have been providing some good action in these same areas and are excellent on the table after a half day of fishing.

On the last trip I ran earlier in the week, after the bottom bite had cooled and we were preparing to head home I noticed some fish swimming up under the boat. After a closer look I determined the fish were king mackerel, and they were big ones too!

Instead of leaving we decided to stay and try to get the big kings feeding. I tossed a few handfuls of live shiners out behind the boat and the mackerel went crazy. Needless to say, the kingfish loved the white bait, and it was well-worth the effort it took to catch it.

These same areas have also been holding shark. If you start getting cut offs, try rigging up with some wire. You’ll find out soon enough what has been stealing your hooks.

Remember, if you’re too busy to go fishing you’re just too busy. Get out and go fishing cuz’ it’s good fer ya!
