Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

King Mackerel are here and there’s no shortage of them. Now is the time to get on a boat and go catch-em up. One thing is for sure, if you want fast action, kings are the way to go. With the south winds we enjoyed all week the weather has been warm and the fish have been feeding. Although there is a lot of schoolie kings around, some of the bigger ones we’ve been catching have been over 20 pounds.
Along with the king and Spanish mackerel we’ve been catching some real nice grouper. The gags are a little more scattered out than they were last month but there still seems to be some good ones inside of 70’ deep. Of course of you have the boat to get out 20 miles or so there is a better chance to get into a big bite of them. These same areas will also hold some nice red groupers.
Spring is also a great time to target black fin tuna. I’ve caught them in as close as 7 miles to the beach, but if I were really going after them, I’d concentrate my efforts in the 100-foot range.
Barracuda are thick over the artificial reefs right now. This is great if you are looking for a wall hanger, lots of half-eaten kings coming to the boat though.
Another fish that we been having some fun with lately is little tunie. The other day we were anchored down over a grouper hole and a school of them came up around the boat. Talk about a hay day! We had six fish on and lines going every which way. If you want to catch some fish now is a great time.
