Venice Inlet and the Gulf of Mexico

Capt. Dave Pinkham

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Another windy week for offshore fishing. Thankfully I was able to squeeze in several trips as the fish were biting. We've been fishing the artificial reefs west of Sarasota County with good success. When action on these manmade fish havens slows we've been targeting hard bottom in the 80' to 100' range in search of grouper.

The other day we fished a sunken wreck in 55' of water. It was a little tough to find due to the sloppy conditions. Using a combination of my loran, GPS, and fish finder to locate it, I marked the spot with my jug weight. With this done, I headed up wind and tossed the anchor. Once the boat settled in over the structure lines were baited and dropped into the water. Almost immediately we hooked up a nice sized cobia. The battle was short lived as the fish made a run under the boat and broke off. Although we lost the cobia we did manage to catch several permit using small live crabs for bait.

Grouper action has been hit and miss the past couple of weeks. One day they bite anything you put in front of them, and the next day you can't provoke a hit with your best efforts. I guess that's why they call it fishin and not catchin.
