Motion Attracting more Strikes

Capt. Preston Harden

Lake Hartwell - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Hartwell Fishing Forecast for September 2014

Water Level: 3.5 feet below full pool
Water Temperature: mid 80s

September starts out like August in a summer pattern with stripers and hybrids deep, concentrated in the lower Lake. By mid- September, surface water temperature has started dropping and the fish become more active. Surface schooling becomes a morning and evening occurrence. Some days by mid -September, we catch more fish on a lucky craft Sammy than live Herring. The Herring down line bite has been on fire this summer. As of late August, fish have moved to deep water. The smaller fish have been coming from 30 to 40 feet deep and the larger fish have been coming from 70 to 90 feet deep. For those who prefer artificial, try a big swim bait on a big jig head reeling fast up and down through the schools of fish. We have caught more fish by reeling the live bait up and down through the schools versus holding the bait still.

Bass will still be deep as we move into September. Bass will still be around Shoals, points and shallow humps. Look for brush piles off the points in 15 to 30 feet deep water. Start with a top water plugs, and then a drop shot around the brush.
