Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water temp 58 to 60

Water is clear

Thing are about to get crazy on Lake Oconee. It is the senario of feast or famine. For long winter months there is little activity, no reports of fish being caught, and everyone staying indoors. Then out of nowhere, everything on the lake starts getting active. Here are a few things to look out for over the next few weeks.

Crappie: The full moon is approach and when it does it brings the best and biggest fish of the entire year. Huge crappie will turn on as they get ready to spawn and come out of the channels onto the flats. This is, by far, the best time of the year to spider rig jigs over these areas.

White Bass: The annual run up the Oconee and Apalachee has already started and many fish are already at Barnett Shoals. This is non stop action, with fish topping out at 3 pounds. You can them by throwing Panther Martins/Roostertail and curly tail grubs.

Stripers/Hybrids: Let's not leave them out, as the head up river and to Wallace Dam. This is the 6th year since the GA DNR has started the re-stocking of stripers on Oconee. We should see some big fish this year.

I am chasing every one of these species! If you would like to book a trip, let me know. With everything going off, I am sure we can find something you like!

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
