fishing getting better

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

May 22, 2008

Water Temp is 73 at Wallace Dam

The shad run is just about finished on Lake Oconee, which means the hybrids and stripers will start showing up in their normal places. For about 3 weeks out of every year the shad run leave fisherman scratching their heads thinking that maybe something horrible has happened that has killed every lineside in Lake Oconee.

It is just the shad run. The fish gorge themselves each and every morning along the rocks of different areas on the lake. It is a slaughterfest for the hybes and they get in a routine of not going to where they normally feed. The only way to catch these fish is to get up early and work the seawalls and rip rap. Just about daylight the run is over and the fishing gets progressively tougher.

This morning the shad were kind of sparse and in a few days it will probably be completely over. It takes a few days for the fish to get it worked out that the shad are not there anymore and then they will move to the places that are productive for them year round.

Using live bait, focus on the humps down toward the dam. Any place on the lake that has a shallow water hump, the shad will get on it when the water is being pulled and the fishing will be great.
