Getting started again

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp is 85 degrees

Water is at full pool and clear for Oconee

This coming month is what we have been waiting on. Just about everything will come on line in the month of October. The hybrids will come out of hiding, the crappie will move up and out of the deep in their pre-stage, and all of us guides will finally start making money again. Hallelujah!

Lets start off first with the stripers and hybrids. The cooler mornings will make the lake "turn back over" and the bait fish will began to congregate in shallower water. The oxygen level will increase as this happens and the fish will follow. The first place these hybrids and stripers always show up in is the River Bend area. You can fish from the Great Waters Boathouse all the way down to Flagpole Point and mark fish. Many afternoons the fish will just start schooling for no apparent reason, so it is always good to have some top water arsenal to throw at them.

The crappie will show up in Richland Creek and they will be there by the scads! Many people prefer to troll with curly tail grubs, not using minnows, because the fish are really aggressive. You will began to see the bigger fish in this area instead of the dinks we catch during the summer with some fish going 1 1/2 pounds. To find them all you need to do is look for the boats. They will be fishing the edge of channels and even in water less than 12 feet.

This is a great month to get everything started off again. I hope everyone spent their off days getting your equipment in top working order. It looks like this is going to be a great year.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
