Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

May 5, 2008
Water Temp is 72 at Wallace Dam
There is alot of muddy water at the dam, which has slowed the lineside fishing down considerably, but just before it showed up the fish were showing up. This year we have caught more big fish than I can remember in years past. It has not been unusual to go to the dam and in 4 hours have 100 pounds of fish in the boat.
Since you can only keep 2 stripers over 22 inches long, my customers and I have limited out pretty quick just about every trip. A few days ago the mud rolled into the area, and it made the fishing all but stop. On one trip I boated one fish and the next day, 2 fish. However as soon as the water begins to clear, which should be this week, it will be wild and crazy again.
The best way to catch these huge fish is of course with live bait. We are using shad that will sometimes weigh in at a pound each. There is nothing more exciting watch a big shad jump out of the water running for his life from a huge lineside. The fish will bust him up in the air, tail slap him, then just when you think he is tired of playing with his food and become disinterested, he will swallow him head first. I hope no one from PETA is reading this.
This make for some great fishing through out the months of May and June. The top water bite is also scheduled to show up just anytime and needless to say, it is great too.
Access Oconee, our subscription service is doing great! Anglers that have signed up for this program are catching more fish and spending more productive time on the water. For the price of a good hamburger every month, Access Oconee takes the guessing game out of finding fish. Go to my website at www.fishingoconee.com and read all about it. It is the greatest tool for the weekend fisherman!
