3 pound crappie!

Capt. Doug Nelms
January 24, 2009
Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp is 47 upper end.

Lake is stained on the upper end.

It is that wonderful time of the year when the stripers get busy and the crappie start staging for spawn. Of course all of the things are still a little early, but the cold weather has done some good things to fishing on Oconee.

The stripers are on the south end of the lake around Double Creek and the mouth of Richland Creek. This is the last place they will be until they make the transition for the annual dam bite, which should start around the first of March. You can catch them on live bait, of course, and the smaller the bait you use, the more fish you will catch. It is during this time of the year that the big stripers gorge themselves with tiny shad. It could be because the little shad don't do well in cold weather, or that there are so many of them it is like a buffet. What ever the reason is they fill up on them and if you can match what they are eating, you are in for a fun day of fishing.

The crappie bite has started doing well. I have already caught over 2 crappie that went over the 3 pound mark. The winter bite is just starting and you should look up on the north end of Sugar Creek, Lick Creek and around the Redlands. We are fishing with Black and Blue Jiffy Jigs tipped with minnows. If you want to see what 3 pound crappie look like, go to my web site at www.fishingoconee.com and check out the Media, Fishing Report Page
