Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Crappie
It is starting to get red hot, here at Lake Oconee, as the crappie are setting up to take their annual trip to shallow water. Over the last few days we have been boating HUGE papermouths in the 2lb plus range. The fish are being caught in Sugar Creek, Town Creek, and up the Apalachee River leg of the lake.
The method is really quite simple. Using as many long poles as you can fish, slowly troll over the river channels, with minnow tipped Hal Flys. The color doesnt seem to matter right now, but if the water is stained, especially up the Apalachee, dark jigs will work better. Troll you jigs at different depths until you find what they like the best. THe slower you can troll, the better your presentation will be because these fish are biting so light right now. However they are hitting, and you can fill your ice chest with your limit in just no time.
As the weather begans to warm up, the fish will be moving up to the lights for some of the greatest night time fishing action in GA. It will take about another 2 weeks for that to happen, but you will be able to limit out in just a few hours on the lake. Keep checking back for reports.
