Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Crappie 5/2/02

The spawn is over but that will not keep you from catching a cooler full of slabs on Lake Oconee. I think that catching fish during this time of the year is probably easier than any other time and once you figure out how, there is nothing to it.

The water is really warming up now and during this time of the year I do most of my crappie fishing at night. Look for lighted docks with deep water and throw small plastic grubs with a slow retrieve. I use the lightest ones I can find for slow presentation and I also use light line, 2 or 4 pound test.

Lick Creek is a great place to start looking for crappie. If the lake is being pulled, it may be a little more difficult to catch them, but keep trying because they will bite.

If you like fishing the traditional way for crappie at night (tying up with lanterns) look under the bridges for the best fishing. Hwy 44 bridge, 278, and Sugar Creek are producing some great catches right now.

Hybrids

Dyars Pasture is loaded up with white bass and hybrids right now, and with fisherman also I might add. This is the time of year when the huge linseeds go up the river to make their false spawning run and it is not unusual for to catch over 100 in one day.

If you are white bass fishing a black rooster tail will do the trick. Throw in eddies and slack currents and use a steady retrieve. If hybrids are your choice, nothing will beat a fresh shad. Live bait is better but right now they will take cut bait just as well. Carolina Rig your bait and throw down current. Last year we caught many hybrids in the 10-pound range and I look for them to be bigger this year.

More Fishing Reports:

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
