Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report
Hybrids 6/3/02
I’m really surprised at the number of people that wait for this time of the year when we get the surface school activity for Hybrids and White bass. And right now it is fast and furious. I fished a couple of gentleman last week and we had not put the boat in the water good before the fish came up. We fished in one spot for 3 hours and caught well over 100 fish. There are a lot of small ones right now, and I suggest that you release fish that are less than 13 inches. These are first year Hybrids and we need to give them time to grow. We actually released all of ours that day and had a ball! The hayfields, Sugar Creek, Port Armor Golf Course, the Pipeline, and a host of other places are producing huge catches. The lure of choice seems to be a poppin cork with a thing popper tied about 12 inches from the cork. White and Chartreuse are the primary colors, however I like to get down deeper and find the bigger fish, so I use a ½ oz rooster tail.
Crappie 6/3/02
The water is around 79 degrees which means the crappie have started in their summer routine, however you can still catch them really good if you know what to do. Shooting docks has been the rage over the last 10 years at Oconee, and if you can master the technique, you will catch the fish. Look for docks that have deep water and "“shoot” a light jig as far back under them as you can. Retrieve the jig slowly and watch for any line twitch. The bite will probably be light. If you don’t get any hits, try shooting the dock at a different angle. Most of the time it is just a different presentation that will make the difference. Start by looking around Sugar Creek, Lick Creek, and up the Apalachee River. The docks close to Tornado Point around the dam are holding a lot of fish right now.
