Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Crappie

July 17, 2002

I must confess I have limited all my crappie fishing to after hours on the lake. It is a lot easier and certainly a lot cooler. If you have read my post before you already know what I am going to tell you. Target lighted docks! That is where the fish are going to hold and the docks with structure and deep water will be the most productive. It will be another month and a half until we change our fishing patterns, but until then just keep pounding those docks and you will find that you can fill your cooler if you hit it right.

Man it is hot but you don’t have to go out in the middle of the day and roast on your boat to catch hybrids. It seems just here lately that the best bite is coming right before dark. The locals are wearing them out at Sugar Creek and the Pipeline by fishing them with an arsenal of lures. Little George’s, Pearl Shad Raps, Thing poppers, and sassy shads, to name a few are the baits of choice. Of course us live baiters are trying out our hand too, but unless you have a good tank that can keep shad alive in the heat, don’t even waste your time. If you just want to target surface action, put in at the Sugar Creek landing and just ride around until you see them busting the top of the water. The white bass will be mixed with Hybrids and they will range from small fish to some up to 3 pounds. Just ride around and look. They will show you were they are.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
