Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Stripers

November 26, 2003

It’s here! I really get a lot of laughs when I tell people that fishing season is just about to began and we are 3 days away from thanksgiving. Most people look at me, cross their eyes, and mumble something about how cold it has to be on the water. But for many of you reading this you know that the cold weather brings on the bigguns!

I fished in river bend on Sunday at Lake Oconee, and I was surprised by how much bait I found in the area. We were going to pull jigs (because we had only one small shad in the boat) and we decided to down-line the lonely shad. Within 3 minutes we had a nice 4-pound hybrid fighting on the other end. We decided to throw the net in shallow water and only caught 4 more shad (it is almost impossible to catch them in deep water) Out of 5 shad we caught 3 hybrids. If we had bait, this report would probably be much longer.

The point is they are here at Oconee and now is the time to catch them. You will need live shad to do this, but if you luck up and find them, what a great time you will have. The bait is deep at River Bend and the fish are following them. Down-lining 4 rods should be the ticket. If you are not sure about where river bend is just call me and I will give you directions.

Going to Lanier tomorrow and chase the bullets and I will post and tell you how well we did.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
