Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hybrids

December 17, 2002

It is just getting better and better here at Lake Oconee and if you want to rip into some great wintertime hybrid action, now is the time to be on the water. We are catching them everywhere, but some of my favorite spots right now are; Sugar Creek (there is tons of bait there) River Bend and The Cliffs across from Brantley’s Marina.

Live bait is the ticket however I have noticed some anglers who insist on trolling shad raps and jigs behind their gas motors. You can catch fish that way, no doubt. But let me tell you a conversation I had last week with one of these anglers who was trolling. I asked, “how are they biting? He said, “GREAT!” I have caught 4 keepers in just an hour.” I proceeded to put out my lines and on my first drift using live shad; I hooked 5 fish and landed 4. I was not on the water fishing but 3 minutes. Not being conceited, my point is simply if you want to catch hybrids, live shad is the way to go.

We have been down lining about 12 feet and the fish have been coming up to them. I can actually see the schools of hybrids on my L-240 swim right up to our bait. That gives us time to prepare before rods start going down. My friend was really amazed at how I “called the shots” the other day while watching the fishfinder. Sorry to say, it was really no skill on my part, just great electronics.

The water is 56 degrees and the cooler it gets the better the fishing is going to be. I will be in Florida the week of Christmas chasing the redfish and snook, but soon as I get back give me a call and well go catch some.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
