Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hybrids

January 3, 2003

Lake Oconee/ Water Temp. 49

Well I don’t like to admit it, but for the first time in a long while I went fishing and got skunked. I went out on New Year’s day with some friends that had never caught a big hybrid and I promised them the biggest fish they had ever caught. You would think by now I would know better…..Anyhow, it didn’t happen and now I have to live with ridicule from close friends until these fish make their minds up to behave.

What I can tell you is that since this weather rolled in, the fish rolled out. Now they are somewhere out there, but I didn’t find them on the 1st. What I found in some of my favorite holes was an empty screen void of fish and bait. We caught bait in Sugar Creek (where it is LOADED up with bait and crappie) and then proceeded to River Bend. The big hybrids have been holding in there since the last of November and we have been doing very well. But when we got there I was amazed at the nothingness I saw on my Lowrance. I mean NOTHING.

Now don’t panic! In a few days after the weather will stabilize they will return. My guess is they are hiding in deep water and will began to behave nicely when we get some stable temps and weather. If I had to go tomorrow, I would certainly head for Sugar Creek where we found about as much bait as I have ever seen on this lake. We threw the net once and had enough nice 3 to 4-inch shad to fish all day.

I will be fishing this week and hopefully I will be able to post a better report. Until then, pray……pray hard 

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
