Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Lanier/Stripers

January 5, 2003

Water Temp 49

I fished in Flat Creek from noon to about 500pm. Last year this time I caught many nice stripers in the back of Flat Creek, and the BB were everywhere. We threw the net for a long time and never caught a BB, but we did catch some 4-inch yellowtails. The guys who had the BB were catching stripers pretty regular.

I saw one angler catch about 6 nice fish weighing in the neighborhood of 11 or so pounds. I did not mark a lot of fish there, but I just felt like they were there. Normally the gulls are partying around there and it always seems to give you the feeling that just about any moment the fish are going to explode.

We had 3 pulls on our shad and one of them turned out to be a 21 pound 7 oz bullet. It was a lot of fun and after about 5 minutes we finally landed him.

If anyone reads my report you know that Flat Creek is primarily the only place I fish on Lanier. Since I live on Lake Oconee I don’t get the time to go up there and do a lot of scouting, so I just stick with what I know. Last year out of the many times I fished Lake Lanier I was skunked only once, which means if you don’t catch a striper in Flat Creek, it will be an accident!

If you want to catch a big striper, Flat Creek is the place to be. If you want info about it, email me or better yet come take a trip with me. It will be something you will never forget.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
