Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report
Lake Oconee/Hybrids
Water Temp 52
Crappie fishing is wide open on Lake Oconee right now and the Hybrids are beginning to show up at the dam. Don’t wait for the dogwoods to bloom in April, the time is now. I am amazed at good intentioned anglers who show up on this great lake at the first sign of dogwood activity, only to find out they have missed the best part of fishing. Anglers are bringing in limit catches of 1 to 2 pound crappie on a daily basis by using the tried and true method of long pole trolling.
The crappie are being caught at several places. The powerlines, and in the cut up the Apalachee River, Sugar Creek, the sticks across from the Redlands ramp, and just about everywhere else. As of today your best bet will be up the Apalachee as the Oconee side is really, really muddy.
I have heard reports of huge hybrids showing up at the dam just over the last few days. They are not there like they will be in a few weeks, but they are on the way. Some friends of mine caught a few tied up to the barrels last week and the biggest one was 9.5 pounds.
If you are interested in taking a trip with me, hurry up and call, it is going to be wild!
Doug Nelms
