Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Oconee/Hybrids

Water Temp 58

The water temp has gone up substantially over the last few days here at Lake Oconee. I noticed my last fishing report showed that the temp was 52 degrees only a week ago. Maybe there is something wrong with the old Lowrance…nevertheless the hybrid fishing is on and the crappie anglers are heading to the banks. I have a beautiful view across the water and while driving home last night it looked like Hartsfield Airport on the far side of the Apalachee. There must have been 50 lanterns and that was just guys fishing on the bank. If you want to catch big crappie, right now is the time. I am hearing of anglers limiting out in the morning hours with big fish to show for it.

The hybrids are on their way to the dam and some anglers have already started showing up at Dyars Pasture waiting for the annual white bass run. Oh that is so much fun, but I think with all the rain you will be wasting your time to go up the river just yet. The dam has nice water that is not so muddy and the big linesides are showing up on the points. I went out today and after down-lining for an hour over what looked to be like a huge school of fish without a bite, I got out the flatlines and we started catching them. I think GAPower generated all day long to run off all the rain we have had and as a result the fishing was just so-so.

But we did manage to catch some nice linesides for a couple of anglers who had never caught anything larger than a few small catfish, so it was really nice. If you don’t want to bother with live bait you may be able to throw a sassy shad or something like it along the points. I did see an angler catch 2 big hybrids while casting a jig of some kind, but the real bites come on live bait.

I am booking trips to catch huge hybrids at the dam for the next few weeks. Some anglers are taking trips just for instruction in how to tackle these things with live bait. If you are interested give me a call, we’ll have a blast!
