Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hybrids/Crappie
Water Temp 60.5
I have been fishing like Neptune’s son over the past few days and sadly I have not taken the time to post a report. I can probably sum it all up by saying this; if you plan on catching trophy size hybrids this year at Oconee, you better not wait another day!
The dam is loaded with boats and anglers are greeting me with catches of Biblical proportions. One angler shouted to me that he took out over 200 pounds of hybrids in one afternoon. My math is not that great but I certainly hope he had more people fishing on the boat other than himself. That would be the story I would use before the judge.
Seriously the bite is on as these fierce fish are beginning their spawn! The main place to concentrate is Wallace Dam and Dyars Pasture. Those two places are about 27 miles apart, but it seems the fish are at one end or the other.
Live bait is the key, of course, and flat lining and down lining seems to be the preferred method. We have had some huge catches with several clients, with some of the fish actually making it to a taxidermist. We have also released just as many too.
I say this so often in the report that when GA Power moves water; the hybrids began to feed. Someone asked the other day where to find a schedule for power generation and I am sad to say that there is no such thing. At least that is what the fine folks at GA power told me on my last tour of Wallace Dam. They generate when the Southern Company contacts them from Alabama. Sounds funny to me too but what do I know, I’m just a lowly fishing guide. I believe them so I just sit there and patiently wait for it to happen.
If you want to catch big hybrids, now is the time to get in on it. I am booking trips daily and we are catching a lot of fish right now. If it is crappie you are interested in, the spawn is just about over, but we are booking exciting trips at night for fast action. Call me quick, it won’t last long!
