Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report
Hybrid Bass/Crappie

What a great year this has been at Lake Oconee! We have seen some really nice fish come from various areas of the lake and I don’t think it is over just yet. The lake is really muddy right now and contrary to some local catfishers I talked to, it has nothing to do with the BFL’s 200 boats that roared out of Sugar Creek on Saturday morning. We have had some really hard rains over the last few days and the mud is showing up everywhere. Of course this is going to effect the fishing for a short period of time, but it will get back to normal in a few days.
You can still catch some nice crappie if you change your everyday tactics and venture out under the cover of darkness. Night fishing is really good now and this will be the case over the next month or so. I have received reports of anglers catching their limits within hours of putting their boat in. Of course the fish in Oconee are moody and you may sit there some time before they decide to eat. But when they do, it is non- stop action. The fish are staged just off the river channels and anglers are fishing at Sugar Creek, Swords, I-20, and Hwy 44 Bridges. It’s not hard to tell where the fish are biting, just “go to the lights”. Sometimes there are so many lights displayed around these crappie boats I fear some planes may become diverted from Hartsfield, but so far we have heard no reports.
My favorite way of fishing for hybrids and crappie during this time is casting to lighted docks with ultra-light tackle. I really enjoy these trips with customers! We can catch a lot of white bass, crappie and hybird bass and we are normally back home in time to watch Letterman. Use a 1/24-ounce rooster tail or any curly tail grub.
The hybrids and white bass have just about finished their spawn up the Oconee River. They are coming back and really hungry. You will find them staging in deep water channels close to strong flowing currents. When GA Power begins to generate from Wallace dam the hybrids and white bass come up to these point and feel. They have even begun to make a few appearances at the Hayfields. It seems to be a little early for them, but they are sporadically showing up.
