Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report

Water Temp 80

July 7, 2003

Well sorry it took so long to post a fresh report. I have been in Boca Grande Florida chasing tarpon, snook, grouper, redfish and trout and I have finally gotten all the salt off of me. Back to the real world!

The hybrids at Lake Oconee have done exceptionally well this year with record catches coming in from many anglers. What’s really great is that we are still catching hybrids right now all over the lake.

If you want to go where fish are school try fishing the hayfields at Sugar Creek. It seems that each and every afternoon the white bass and hybrids are busting up on the surface and chasing bait with regularity.

The standard arsenal for this type of fishing is a popping cork with a poppin thing tied about a foot behind it. If you can’t catch schooling fish with this set up, it is just an accident. Pulling live gizzard shad across these points isn’t bad either. Down lining shad to the desired depths promises to give you exciting rod bending action all afternoon. The size of these hybrids will run around 5 to 6 pounds, since the big fish have all laid out now.

Several places to look for schooling fish are: Port Armor Golf Course, Hayfields, The Pipeline, Lick Creek, around Brantleys Marina and the Hwy. 44 Bridge. Sometimes these things will surprise you and just come up anywhere as just 3 days ago I watched a huge school bust up out from my dock, up the Apalachee River side of Oconee.

Fishing should return to normal this weekend since all the Independence Day traffic has subsided. The lake was as high as I have seen it last weekend, actually ebbing over my sea wall. This will not hurt the fishing and it should be great the rest of this month.
