Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report
Water Temp 88
August 15, 2003
I answered a question posed by another angler just a few days ago that completely caught him off guard! He asked, “What is your favorite time of the year for fishing?” I smiled and told him, “August!” Why you may ask? Because August is the best month of the year for all of us to think like a fish. We get to sit on our docks and look out into the abyss and say to ourselves, “Where the heck did those fish go”. It is also a great month to do rod and reel repairs, install that new depth finder, by new equipment and piddle around with your boat while it is out of the water.
For some reason ALL the fish disappear at Lake Oconee during the month of August. I think there is a huge cave somewhere on this lake and they all hold up there until things begin to cool off. What a party they must be having right now. And they don’t get hungry down in this cave either because the lake is FILLED with a GAZILLION shad fry that are easy pickins for hybrids and white bass. Now to be serious for a few minutes this honestly has to be one of the hardest months to catch fish, period. I have a friend that has beaten the water over the last 5 days and they have picked up only a couple.
Now I understand this is a fishing report but the honest truth is that you have to be lucky to catch anything worth spending time out in 85 plus degree temps. I have noticed small white bass schooling on various points like, the area around Swords Bridge, Blue Springs Marina, and where the Apalachee and Oconee meet at the train trestle. But other than just catching a few small ones, it is pretty quiet on the lake. If we could develop a thermo cline the reports would be much better, but alas we are fishermen and not miracle workers.
So as of this week it is a great time to re-spool all you reels, go to your favorite tackle store and pickup those great end of the year discounts and stay inside until these dog days go away. Sorry to be depressing but you should thank me for my honesty. Don’t worry though, because in just a few weeks EVERYTHING is going to change and the hybrids will resume a predictable pattern and things will be normal once again. If by chance any of you find that special cave where they all hold up, please let me know…I promise not to tell anyone!
Tight Lin….oh never mind,
Doug Nelms
