Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report

Water Temp 79

Hallelujah! We all knew it would happen and finally it has. Officially our fall hybrid bite has started off with a bang and it looks like it is going to be a great year at Lake Oconee.

The reason these bullets are already bunching could be as a result of a lot of things. It could have something to do with the incredible shad hatch we had this summer. Normally during our “dog days’ you can see tiny shad across the water, but this year it was unbelievable. I spotted them in coves that I had never seen them before and LOTS of them.

It could be that the hybrids are on the upswing according to our wonderful DNR biologists who are forecasting a banner year. If it is anything like last year…………….all of us fishing guides are going to be rich. Just kiddin!

Several anglers have been catching the first hybrids stacking up in their favorite haunts. One good friend of mine reported a cooler with 10 fish that ranged from over 6 pounds to 3 pounds. These were all caught in just a few hours fishing with live bait. Speaking of live bait, if you don’t do it, this is the time to learn it. The hybrids love them like Haagen-Dazs and if you are set up to use them, you are going to have a blast!

I would start looking for shad around the bridges and shallow areas. Right now you will find them in the mornings in water around 12-15 feet. By afternoon they are coming up on the flats and in coves. I threw my net last week, (not my big one) and caught 100 in one cast. Oh if they would only stay there all year.

If the bait is there, the fish soon will be. Start looking around Sugar Creek and Lick Creek and the flat area across from Brantley’s Marina. Also the Pipeline will stack them up this year and the fishing should be red hot down there. I heard a report of one guy catching 50+ hybrids at the Pipeline just last week.

I know it is deer season, but if you want to enjoy great weather and wild fishing, NOW IS THE TIME. I am booking trips daily and I would love to take you out and show you how to catch these monsters. CALL ME!
