Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report

Water Temp 70

If you love to catch big hybrids but sitting on a boat and baking like a cookie in a gas oven is not your style, now is the time to come to Oconee. I love fishing this time of year maybe more than any, because the leaves are starting to change, the jet skiers have grown tired, and the fishing is red hot!

The cooler temps we have been experiencing over the last few weeks has turned the fishing on. I have even noticed the crappie anglers trying their hand at slabs as the lake starts its annual “turnover”. The shad are everywhere and the fish are following them. Just on my dock yesterday afternoon, I caught enough 4-inch gold-eyes on just one throw of the trusty cast net to fish the entire day.

Look for the hybrids at Sugar Creek, the 19th hole, the flat across from Port Armor, and the Pipeline. Yesterday I marked them in a really good place just across from the Bull Hole, where the new sea wall is going in. It was loaded up with hybrids and white bass and you will know by the amount of boats fishing there as to its exact location.

Since the water temp is starting to drop it is not as hard to keep your baitfish alive in your wells. Remember though, you still need to use your chemical to keep them active. A sluggish bait will not get a bite, unless the fish are just hungry out of their minds. I have been catching hybrids by down lining and flat-lines. I pull them slowly over the schools of shad and just wait for the rod to go down into the water. Last week we boated one that went over 7 pounds. He was long and skinny (looked like a torpedo) and he measured over 23 inches. I am sure he would have been 10 pounds if it had been springtime.

I am booking trips right now and what a great way to spend a day or an afternoon. Watching the geese fly around, enjoying the cool breeze gently blowing, the leaves turning an autumn gold and…wait, I gotta a bite! Man I love the fall.
