Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 41

The water on Lake Oconee is muddy enough for a young raccoon to walk across from Morgan to Green County without getting his feet wet. We have had torrential rains over the past few days and according to the weather man, more is on the way.

We need the rain, but it is not helping the fishing. The crappie anglers, who have been catching them around my house for the past few days have pulled anchor, set rudder to the Apalachee River and have shown up around Port Armor looking for clear water. You can catch crappie around the deep coves that can be found in the middle of the Lake. If I had to guess I would say it will take about a week with no rain for the fishing to be back.

The hybrids are showing up in River Bend and if you are patient you can catch them. You may pull in there and see nothing for a while, and then out of no where all the lines are screaming on your boat. I think it has a lot to do with the water being generated and the shad balling up on these points, but they are there.

If I was looking for hybrids I would start out around Cuscowillow and work my way to the dam. There are several deep pockets to look in and the deep bank on the right side of the Lake just around the bend has been a great place for hybrids.

They are coming at about 20 feet down and hanging out in water around 45 feet. Not your typical winter bite but it is a bite.

The good news is that in less than a month from today the hybes should be showing up at the dam. If you want to catch a trophy that will be the time to do it. I am getting more calls this year than ever before for guided trips. Maybe the economy is getting better or maybe I am getting better at this, the latter part is probably not true, nevertheless now is the time to get ready to get hooked up with these wild things.

Looking for a trip, call me quick!
