Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 59 to 64

Since my last report we have experienced the “feast or famine” scenario here at Lake Oconee. The cold front that came through really effected the fishing in a bad way. One day before the front my customers experienced the greatest hybrid fishing I have had the pleasure to be a guide on.

Over the last 2 weeks the hybrids have been scattered all over the areas around Wallace Dam. When fish have shown up, they have been small, 3 pound or less, “schoolies” that you can catch all year long. I saw the water temp go from 65 degrees in the afternoon, back to 58 and 59 during the afternoon.

Finally the day after the full moon got out of here, the fish showed up and now everything is happy in Whoville! Yesterday morning at the dam area I saw people catching fish everywhere and they were using everything from minnows, shad, cut bait to throwing plastics.

If you are coming to the lake and you want to catch hybrids, look no further than Wallace Dam. If your fish finder is broken don’t worry about it, just look for the boats and do what they are doing. Down-lined live bait seems to be the ticket in the am and when the afternoon rolls around free-lined bait over the shallow points will do the trick.

This is the busiest month of the year for most of us guides, but I still have a couple of dates open if you are interested in landing a trophy hybrid. When you see me out there please stop and say HI!

Tight lines,

Doug Nelms
