Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 74

Now is the time of year all of us “professionals” earn our money here at Lake Oconee. The hybrids are still around, but you have to look for them and it can be a difficult task. The easy bite at the dam has slowed considerably and you have to start looking on humps and flats in order to find fish. Yesterday we boated 20 between 3pm to 6pm. The biggest one was 7.5 pounds and I saw my friend in a boat next to me break off one that had to be over 10!

When I write these reports I always mention how important it is for GA Power to pull the water in order for these fish to turn on. But now, above any other time of the year, it is mandatory in order to catch hybrids. I have a couple of theories about why this happens, but that is another story for another day.

Hybrids can be caught at the Pipeline across from Great Waters Golf course, the cove where Reynolds Boat House is located and generally all the flat areas you will find in Lick Creek. 3 to 4 inch shad is what I am fishing with, but do not go out there unless you stop and buy a few dozen BIG bass minnows. The shad bite can stop without warning and sometimes the only thing they will hit is the big minnows.

You can cast at them using storm minnows, popping corks, spittin images and just about anything that is white and runs on top of the water. According to my fishing logs there are still a few scattered days that the dam bite will still be on. Speaking of that, last week the lake record striper was almost broken when an angler boated one weighing over 28 pounds. I wish with all my heart that I could honestly tell you he was in my boat, but alas that would be lying and you know we fishing guides don’t lie.

The early morning and late afternoon bite will be more productive over the next few weeks, so get out early and stay late.

I have several days available for the month of May for half and full day trips. If you call me I can guarantee you that we will catch the lake record striper, honestly, I ain’t lying this time!

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
