Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 62.5

The late fall, early winter bite is finally here and we are catching a lot of nice hybrids.

This is the official beginning of our guided fishing year and it promises to be a really good one. Most people are putting up their gear and waiting for the winter to get through, but if you want to catch some really nice hybrids, this is the time of year to do it.

Really it is pretty simple too. Just get in your boat and look for the gulls! When you see them diving, slowly approach them and throw a top water plug over into the Malay and BAM! Yesterday afternoon I fished from 1 o’clock to 4 and we boated 28 huge hybes. Make sure that you have your flat lines ready and load them up with large bass minnows. The shad are going to be hard to catch right now, but they seem to like the minnows just as good, and they are a lot easier to keep!

Look in the areas of Sugar Creek, River Bend, Satellite Cove, and on the points of all these golf courses. The hybrids will come up on the flats and feed as they school the shad up in big balls. The hybrids are feeding on, what I call “butterbean shad” which is this year’s hatch of about an inch long.

Yesterday I threw a 4 inch Spitting Image and didn’t get a strike on it. Use the smallest rattletraps, Rapalas, etc, you can find and you are sure to get into some great action.
