Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water is 74 degrees in Sugar Creek

The lake is trying to finally clear up, just when the rain looks like it is coming back in. I caught bait today in Sugar Creek and I haven’t seen the water this clear in 3 weeks. The fish have started back biting and the shad run is just beginning.

The shad run here on Oconee last for about a week, sometimes 2 and it is a great time to catch big hybes. Forget about the dam, forget about down-lining, forget about everything you know and pull your baits as close to the seawalls as you can around the dam area. Flat-lining these baits are a sure way to catch your limit in hybes in no time.

Look for the fish early in the morning around the islands at the dam. Get in the coves where you see the shad schooling up against the walls and just pull a shad through them. Sounds easy I know, but it really works and you will have a blast!

I have a special running for the rest of this month for hybrid trips. You can fish 6 people for the same price as 4 people. Give me a call if you are interested.

His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
