Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 44 up Apalachee River

47 in middle of the lake

I think we are about to get everything worked out on Lake Oconee. Over the past few days and the huge crappie have showed up in thier familiar haunts. You may ask, "I thought this was a report about hybrid bass fishing, what does crappie have to do with that?" Good question!

Last year the crappie fishing was the opening act for the hybes. Crappie fishing was horrible last year and as a result of that the hybes didn't do that well either. It was contributed to the fact that Sinclar had its drawdown; which stopped the release of Oconee into it, that kept the fish from ever getting excited enough to eat alot.

So, with things getting back to normal, and the cold weather setting in, we are starting to see fishing as it is supposed to be.

Many of the big humps down close to the dam are holding alot of hybes and the best way to catch them is with spoons. Over the past few trips we have caught fish in 35 foot of water using a 1/2 ounce Hopkins spoon. Also in the Double Creek area, we should be getting some good action for top water, it is only a matter of time.

There are a wrath of gulls hanging out around flagpole and that is a great area to drop your spoons. Crank up your electronics and look for fish right on the bottom. Chances are its hybes and you can drop down to them and do pretty good. Speaking of electronics be careful not to be fooled by all the gar that are on the south end of the lake. If you mark alot of big fish, and begin to see gar rolling, that is probably what is down there. Hybes and gar dont like to hang out together too much, and when I spot them, I normally leave.

We are booking up for the spring and if you are interested in going, now is the time to call me. Tight lines Doug
