Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

April 19, 2007

Water Temp 65

Hey guys! What a great season this has started off to be for hybrid bass fishing. Over the past few weeks I have met some really interesting people and created new friendships. I want to say thanks to everyone that has fished with me since the first of the year and the good news is the fishing is just going to get better.

When the fish leave the dam, a lot of anglers leave with them, but late April through June have proved to be an awesome time to catch big fish, let me rephrase that, big crazy fish! The hybes have finished their spawn and they are lean and mean. In just a few weeks from now we will be using gizzard shad that will top the scales at over a pound. There is nothing more exciting than to see linesides “blow up” on these shad and knock them out of the water.

The way this year started off, I am almost sure that we will see some really huge stringers come out of Oconee in the next few weeks. The shad run is just about ready to start and if you want to try you luck at fishing with shad, the moment is upon you. According to my logs, just any day now the shad will be spawning and millions of them will move onto the banks and rip rap just before the sun comes up.

Throw your cast net one time and you’re done. If you have no net, throw a white spinner bait and just catch the fish; remove the middleman!

Something new I want to tell you about. Due to it popular demand our nighttime “run and gun” fishing trips have been brought back. These trips usually go out around 10 pm and we fish the lighted docks for crappie and hybrids. Many times on these trips you can fill up a cooler and we do it by casting jigs on ultra light tackle. The cost of these trips is $175.00 and you can have up to 4 people on the boat. My son Jason is running these trips and he is almost as good of a fisherman as his ole man! Don’t tell him I said that!

Just give us a call if you are interested!
