Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

August 20, 2007

Water Temp 90’s+

The tarpon are biting really great in the panhandle of Florida, which means nothing concerning the fish in Lake Oconee. You may be better off going to Florida right now to catch fish, providing you can stand the heat.

If you look back on archived reports that I have posted this is no great surprise! During the dog days of summer time the fish just don’t do well. The lake has turned over, the fish are scattered and in just a few days you will see millions of tiny shad surfacing in pools all over the lake. When that happens we normally just stay indoors, watch baseball and eat ice cream. (Probably need to lay off the ice cream for a little while)

But if you must go, arm thyself with a white rooster-tail and look for schooling fish. They probably wont be very big, but they can be a lot of fun to catch. Also people are still catching a few here and there on goober rigs.

This is the saddest time of the year for us guides. We wish it would never come and these are the days we wish for deep water lakes like Lanier, where the fishing continues during the summer. But alas, before you know it, fall will be here and we will be back on them again.

Good Luck
