Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 65
The shad run is on and the fish are responding to it very well. The shad run occurs every year around the middle of April, and it is when millions of shad lay their eggs around and on the rip rap at the break of dawn.
This concentrated amount of bait fish causes the largemouth and stripers to go crazy. Many anglers use white spinnerbaits and throw right into the churned up water. You never know what you are going to pull out. It could be a 5 pound largemouth or a 10 pound striper, but needless to say, it is a lot of fun.
The shad will run against the seawalls in the early part of the mornings. We catch so many stripers this time of year just by pulling planer boards right next to the walls. It only last about an hour after daylight, but the amount of fish you can catch can be overwhelming.
The water is still heavily stained and if GAPWR will have a strong water release, it would greatly help the situation. I am booking dates for hot spring top water action. Give me a call.
