Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

August 1, 2009
Water temp 85
We are still catching many good sized striped bass, even though the water temp has risen to almost 90 degrees. The top side of the lake is just dead, but the tailrace of Wallace Dam is producing a steady bite every afternoon. Technically, it is the headwaters of Lake Sinclair, but since it takes only 3 minutes longer to put the boat in down there, Lake Oconee still gets the billing.
In the afternoons, when GAPWR is generating, the stripers come into this oxygen-rich water and feed on the hundreds of shad that are coming through the turbines. On a typical afternoon we will boat between 15 to 20 fish by throwing live bait out on the bottom and letting the current take you down the river. The fish seem to favor shad about 3 to 4 inches long and it usually takes about one ounce of lead to get it down on the bottom. Hangs are to be expected so bring plenty of terminal tackle with you. Also, if you have never been down there, I strongly suggest you go with someone first as it can be very hazardous. Every year boats flip over, people are thrown into the water and just two days ago we rescued some boaters that ran their runabout up on a huge rock outcropping. Had we not been there, they would have had to spend the night out there.
We are not only great fishing guides but we also moonlight as super heros. :)

Doug
